In 1932, wholesaler Adriaan van Well from Zoetermeer devised a form of cooperation to give a firm answer to the competition from the wholesale companies.
From now on, a group of 16 of his independent customers would cooperate intensively in the field of joint purchasing and advertising with their supplier Adriaan van Well. The voluntary branch company was born with the name of DE SPAR, Door Eendrachtig Samenwerken Profiteren Allen Regelmatig: By Working Together All Benefit Regularly.
The idea of facing the competition in this way was a huge success. Belgium soon followed after The Netherlands. Spar is now known worldwide with more than 13,000 stores in 48 countries.
